Cortexin

Intramuscular injection

Overview

Cortexin is a complex polypeptide mixture extracted from bovine cerebral cortex, containing a range of neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors with combined molecular weights below 10 kDa. The preparation is proposed to exert neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects by modulating glutamatergic transmission, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting synaptic function.

Mechanism of Action

It has been used primarily in Russia and Eastern Europe for cognitive and neurological indications..

Research Summary & Key Findings

Multiple open-label and controlled trials published in regional neurology journals have reported improvements in cognitive outcomes following stroke, traumatic brain injury, and cognitive impairment, although methodological quality and replication in Western literature remain limited. The heterogeneous peptide composition complicates mechanistic validation and regulatory assessment. Clinical use remains largely confined to post-Soviet healthcare systems.

Clinical Status

In Clinical Trials

Cortexin is currently undergoing clinical trials. It is not yet FDA-approved and is available only through clinical research settings or investigational protocols.
