Beta-Defensin 2
Overview
Beta-defensin 2 (hBD-2) is an antimicrobial peptide of approximately 40 amino acids produced by epithelial cells in response to infection or inflammation. It disrupts microbial membranes and also functions as a chemoattractant for immune cells via CCR6 receptor binding.
Mechanism of Action
Therapeutic interest includes infection control and immune adjuvant applications..
Research Summary & Key Findings
Preclinical studies have confirmed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and some viruses, along with immunomodulatory properties. Clinical development of recombinant or synthetic beta-defensin 2 for topical or systemic use remains in early phases, with no advanced trials or approvals reported.
Clinical Status
Beta-Defensin 2 is in the research phase with limited clinical data in humans. Current evidence is primarily derived from preclinical (animal or in vitro) studies.
